Review: Shades of Grey by Jasper Fford
Hello there! I just finished reading our first book, Shades of Grey by Jasper Fford and decided I would get this blog started, so, here it goes...
I found Shades of Grey to be an excellent read. It follows Eddie Russett on his adventure into the fringes of a society, a society based on color. But it's not what you might think, people only see certain colors of the spectrum, and some see more colors than others. In true dystopian form, Fford paints a vivid picture of a world controlled by the few in which color dictates occupation, . What set Shades of Grey apart for me was the richness of the characters, and the absurdity of the world in which Eddie is set. This book is for anyone who enjoys a well developed world, with loveable/comtemptible/hopeful/strong/funny/charming characters, and of course, tomfoolery. With a rough-and-tumble love interest and much internal conflict, I couldn't put it down. My only issues are a slow plot and excruciating cliff-hanger ending but it is the first book in a trilogy, so there more where it came from. The next book of the Shades of Grey series, Painting by Numbers, is due to hit the bookshelves in 2013. Adios!
